The Central Bank Numismatic and

MuseumThe Central Bank Numismatic and Philatelic Museum was established by Monetary Board Resolution in 1978 and inaugurated in 1985.

It consists lf three exhibition halls:

  1. The Numismatic Hall, which includes the museum housing coins, bills, and medals.
  2. The Philatelic Hall, which contains a collection of more than a century of Dominican Stamps dating from 1865 to 1999.
  3. The Temporary Exhibit Hall, where items are displayed for a limited time.

The Numismatic Hall shows the evolution of currency, from the age of bartering until the creation of coins, through the age of mercantile currency and up to modern payment methods, such as credit cards. It includes the numismatic history of the Dominican Republic and its implications in the political arena, as well as in banking and national finance.

Our numismatic collection includes:

  1. Numerous objects used in trading, mercantile coins, and antique pieces from other countries.

  2. First coins of the New World minted in Seville, Spain, in 1505 for circulation in the island of Hispaniola.

  3. Precious metals vault, with a model of the Pueblo Viejo gold mine operated by Rosario Dominicana, as well as ingots and artisanship in gold objects made out of gold extracted from the mine.

  4. Foreign coins that once circulated in Hispaniola.
  5. Early bills and coins of the Dominican Republic.
  6. Municipal bills and sugar refinery tokens.
  7. Medals and decorations.
  8. Fractional bills.
  9. Commemorative coins.
  10. Bills and coins currently in circulation.

In addition, the collection houses three related exhibitions, which are: Museum

  • A section on land and aquatic salvage;
  • A section on precious metals showing their mining, production, and usage for coins and other objects.

  • A section on the methods for manufacturing bills and coins, showing traditional and modern minting and engraving methods.

These exhibits show details related to the founding of the Casa de la Moneda in Santo Domingo, as well as reproductions of engravings, objects, and pieces that represent the three periods when said institution was in operation.

The Philatelic Hall exhibits a collection of the nation’s stamps relevant to the period between 1865 and 1999. Here, the stamp collector as well as the non-specialist will find knowledge and entertainment regarding the cultural aspects to be gained through stamps, as related to history, geography, flora, fauna, arts, sciences, and communications media.

In the Temporary Exhibit Hall you can find exhibits that are to be shown for a limited period of time, related to numismatics as well as other topics. The hall is also used for cultural and scientific seminars and talks.

There also exists a numismatic exchange program among a number of central banks, museums, and individual collectors worldwide.
